Field study group activities

The Field Study Group is an informal group that meets throughout the year. Meetings are normally held on the FIRST WEDNESDAY of each month and begin at 7.30pm. This group enables members to learn about fieldwalking, excavation, recording and the study and processing of finds. Sometimes people bring along items, photographs or news articles of interest for discussion, at other times members pool information gathered about a particular topic.

From 1st October, 2009 the Field Study Group meetings will be held at the St. Nicholas Community Centre, Holmechurch Lane, Beverley. Contact Graham Myers on 07815 088573.

In 2008/9 the Field Study Group helped with the setting up of a small museum at Southburn farm, located near Driffield.

One of our ongoing activities is using the new resistivity meter to survey local sites. We have already surveyed the medieval site at Hall Garth near Beverley Minster and what were thought to be henge monuments at North Newbald and Walkington. We have also surveyed parts of Beverley Westwood.

The Field Study Group complements the programme of lectures by offering members an opportunity to gain practical, hands on experience of planning, recording and handling of artifacts in addition to doing some landscape archaeology.
