In another of our Field Studies on Tour Series we are pleased to announce a guided visit to the Grade 1 Listed St James Church in the small village of Nunburnholme.
The present church was built in the 12th century, probably on the site of an earlier church. The nave and chancel date from the 13th century. There was much mid/late 19th century restoration. The tower was added in 1903 in commemoration of its most famous Rector, Francis Orpen Morris. Major features inside the church include a spectacular Romanesque decorated arch, medieval glass, and the recently moved and renovated Viking Age cross shaft, one of the finest in the north of England.
There is parking by the roadside near the church. Please make every effort not to block the road as there may be passing farm vehicles.
It would be appreciated if you could let us know if you intend to come along so we have an idea of numbers. Please email [email protected] to confirm your attendance.
